Dubai, UAE: The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing (TGR) World Rally Team (WRT) has clinched an outstanding one-two victory in the 2024 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) at Croatia Rally.
Sébastien Ogier and co-driver Vincent Landais secured a well-deserved first-place victory in the No.17 Toyota GR YARIS Rally1 Hybrid Electric Vehicle, with Elfyn Evans and Scott Martin following close behind in the No.33 Toyota GR YARIS Rally1 Hybrid Electric Vehicle. TOYOTA GAZOO Racing achieved four straight wins in Croatia.
This win sees TGR maintain its uninterrupted winning streak across the rally’s demanding asphalt event since it joined the FIA World Rally Championship calendar in 2021. Toyota also sustains a strong manufacturers’ championship lead with 176 points in total.
Akio Toyoda, TGR-WRT Chairman, said: “Seb, Vincent, congratulations! You’ve brought big points to the team for the manufacturers’ championship. Elfyn and Scott earned important points as well with second place. I would like to thank everybody as all our crews completed this difficult rally with unpredictable weather.”
Toyoda added: “TOYOTA GAZOO Racing achieved four straight wins in Croatia. However, it doesn’t mean Croatian stages are the ones we excel at. The team always prepared various things for the changeable weather in Croatia at this time of the year, and the drivers responded with aggressive driving to take the win. The next round is Portugal, and I hope that the preparation goes well so that all our cars will be able to complete the rally safely. I’m sure Jari-Matti and the team members will continue their great job to be ready for that.”
The stages around the Croatian capital Zagreb once more delivered challenging conditions and close competition, with less than 10 seconds separating the top two in the overall standings. The TGR team kept the pressure on until the final day of the rally. A clean run for Ogier and co-driver Landais allowed them to claim the lead, while Evans and Martin regained their momentum to continue in second overall.
Over the years, Toyota has been participating in many different forms of motorsports, including Formula One, the World Endurance Championship (WEC), and the Nürburgring 24 ‎Hours endurance race. Toyota’s participation in these events was overseen by separate entities within the company until April 2015, when Toyota established TGR, ‎to consolidate all of its motorsport activities under one in-house brand. The WRC championship continues with Rally de Portugal from 9-12 May. Taking place throughout Matosinhos near Porto in the north of the country, it features classic stages on sandy and rocky roads.
